I have read many of both these great writers. And I have always enjoyed their works, independently. They must have thoroughly enjoyed writing this together. But the final product, although good, was not great. It lacked the stirrings that are so well defined in a true Sickens and the sharpness of a true Collins. Was it worth the read? Yes. Written in collaboration with Wilkie Colllins, this book is representative of the best efforts of both Dickens and Collins. It made me want to revisit the works of both writers. This is a great story, full of twists and turns. I loved it!

But not one of his best. If you put it up next to Tale of Two Cities, for example, you see that it is just a pale reflection of Dickens's ability to spin a good plot with interesting, amusing, and entertaining characters.
I'm still rather puzzled by the story, which at first sight -- who am I to critique it, though????? -- seems rather contrived or unnatural -- with events not necessarily following one after the other of their own weight, but forced into place, resulting in a succesion of scenes which renders itself difficult to believe , or at least to accept as humanely possible. My best advice get it!!!! and read it!!!! and PLEASE, PROVE ME WRONG!!.
Only Wilkie Collins could come up with so many twists of fate in a story. At one point in great disappointment at one of these I had almost decided not to finish the book! Finish it... The ending is rewarding!
This novel was a joint effort by the authors and friends Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins. Although it is a nice story and definitely entertaining to read, I can't help but find it a diluted version of the quality of both authors.
A Collaboration of two fine authors. However .... I like & prefer reading them solo. Having read much more of Collins works (than Dickens) at this point, I have a preference for Collins & can pretty well determine which parts of the atory to attribute to each author. These joint efforts just don't have much appeal for me. I guess I am a purist?
